The headline finding
Of the bookable saver-class seats we tracked to a closed episode (a sighting followed by a confirmed absence), 79% were gone before our scanner saw them a second time. The median lifetime falls below our scan resolution, most bookable seats simply don't survive one scan interval. Among the seats that did last long enough to measure, the 90th percentile lifetime was 12.7 hours (n=659 closed episodes).
Waitlisted inventory behaves completely differently: median time-to-resolution was 96 hours, with a 90th percentile around 4 weeks (n=5,511). Waitlist churn is slow; bookable-seat churn is fast. Treating them as one category, which most trackers implicitly do, hides both signals.

Closed episodes only (n varies by city pair, see the count column). "% single-sighting" is the share of episodes that never lasted past one scan. Durations are lower bounds at scan resolution (see methodology below).

TYO → JFK has the smallest sample (n=58) and should be read as directional, not precise: 98% single-sighting is consistent with either an extremely fast-churning city pair or simply too few closed episodes to resolve a distribution yet.
Methodology
Layflat's fleet scans ANA business class award availability across 9 North American hubs to Tokyo every few minutes, around the clock. Every scan records either a sighting (a seat is bookable on a given flight/date) or an absence (a previously-seen seat is no longer there). We reconstruct episodes, continuous stretches from first sighting to confirmed absence, from that sighting/absence stream.
Two important caveats:
- Closed-episode censoring. Only episodes that ended within our measurement window are included in the duration stats. Episodes still open at the end of the window (or that started before it) are excluded, which biases the sample toward episodes that resolved in time to be observed, a standard survival-analysis caveat.
- Durations are lower bounds. A seat that appears and disappears entirely between two scans is recorded as lasting "0 hours" at our resolution, when its true lifetime could be anywhere up to one scan interval. Reported medians and percentiles should be read as floors, not exact values.
What this means for you
If a bookable ANA saver seat has a roughly 4-in-5 chance of vanishing before a second scan, checking manually, even once a day, even once an hour, loses the race most of the time. The only way to catch these seats reliably is to be scanning continuously and to get alerted the instant one appears, which is the entire reason Layflat's watcher fleet exists.
It also means honesty matters more than optimism: when Layflat tells you a seat is "likely still there," that claim is backed by this same measured data, not a guess.
